Planting Wildflowers Tips
Buy jasmine seeds wisely. Make sure and choose varieties that are well adapted to
your environment. A package of seeds will cover about ten square feet while a quitter
of a pound will cover 1000 square feet. A little bit goes along way. Don’t over
seed especially with mixes. You may choke out some of the smaller flowers. Native
species are a sure thing because you know that they already love the climate,
avoid planting any introduced invasive species.
Most
wildflowers like full sun and soil that’s got low fertility and low nitrogen. But
for shady areas, they are species that love the shade. You are going to need
some gardening tools and upside down flower pot. Till or break up the ground just like you would for a vegetable
garden, so you are planting in a bare ground. Don’t till any deeper than you
have to. Two inches will usually suffice. Weeds can be a real problem in a
wildflower planting, so you want to irrigate the newly tilled area to get the
weeds germinate.
Wait a
couple of days and then get rid of any weeds that sprout and restart the
process at one more time. To get proper coverage, always divide your seeds in
two no matter how much you are sowing. Mix half of the seed with an inert
material like vermiculite or sand, but not sea sand. Use a one to ten ratio,
one part seed and ten parts inert. Use a rotary spreader or spreading by hand. Make
sure you get full coverage. The great thing about the sand and vermiculite is
that you can see where you’ve broadcast. Now mix up the second batch of seed
and do it over again. Next, stamp down the seed with either your feet or a lawn
roller or a piece of plywood.
If you
are going to plant your seeds in the spring, be sure and put them in the
freezer for a couple of days before planting, which will help germination. So
give yourself a gift this spring and plant flowers this fall.
